THE NOISE:
SUNDAY, MAY 4TH, 2008: Join the Welcoming Walk from Ikea Parking Lot once again at 1 pm to rally on the committed student activists in their second journey from Calgary to Edmonton. These students believe the UN must uphold to the agreement to deploy peacekeepers into Darfur, and need the support of their community to ensure the message will be heard by Canadian politicians. The Welcoming Walk will be 15km from Ikea to the City Centre MacEwan Campus Cafeteria, located on 106th street and 104th avenue. The Rally will commence at 4:30 pm, and include performances by In Irons, Lazarush, and The People's Poets, interactive information booths and artwork, members from the NGO community, and speakers to address the situation in Darfur.
Last year over 300 concerned citizens took to the streets to march the final 30 km-leg of the amazing journey taken by Edmonton students all the way to Churchill Square. Students, politicians, and community members showed their support to pressure the Canadian government to push for the UN agreement to send military support into Darfur with signs, steps, and solidarity of voice: We Walk for Peace! We Walk for Action! We Walk FOR...the people of DARFUR! This chant echoed off the towering buildings downtown Edmonton as the final steps were taken.
