THE WALK : This April, MacEwan students will once again take to the highways. On April 27, 2008, 35 students will embark upon an 8-day walk from Calgary to Edmonton, journeying over 30 km a day along the QE II highway - one of the busiest highway in Canada - to raise awareness of the suffering and violations of the rights of the civilians in Darfur. Our focus is to urge full implementation of the agreement, as decided by the UN last September, to send 26,000 peacekeepers into Darfur, with proper equipment support. Enduring only a small fraction of the immense suffering the people of Darfur experience everyday, we will walk for peace, we will walk for global action, and we will walk for the people of Darfur.

Walk for Darfur completed its inaugural trek from Calgary to Edmonton last May, and to date, the tragic situation in Darfur is continuing - with no end in sight. Developments over the past year have failed to halt the appalling violence and injustice that plagues the region. The international community needs to hear, stronger than ever, the voices of Canadians united for change and hope.

We are campaigning Walk for Darfur to both the general public and the leaders of our country, encouraging people to get involved at all levels: writing letters to politicians, donating to provide humanitarian assistance, and lobbying for Canadian involvement in ending the suffering of more than 4 million people in Darfur. This year we are recruiting other student groups at post-secondary institutions across Canada to join our national campaign. We intend to have a pan-Canadian movement of students mobilized to raise awareness of the atrocities in Darfur. Through the power of media – both locally and nationally – we hope to share our story with all of Canada and pressure the international community to act now.We are an organization with growing experience in the field of affecting change. Our walk in 2007 was well-received and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The students of Grant MacEwan College proved themselves able ambassadors and role models to high school students, community members, and the media. Our walk garnered attention from all major media outlets and companion walks inspired by Grant MacEwan students were held in the Albertan communities of Calmar and Ponoka.

We are not radical in our approach to affect change. We are educated youth of today who will not stand for violations and attacks against innocent civilians in Darfur. We will not stand for excuses made by the international community. And we will not stand by and allow the people of Darfur to suffer in silence. As the countless atrocities are allowed to continue unhindered in Darfur, and the world’s worst humanitarian crisis only deepens, we will walk for the people of Darfur this coming April and do what we can to affect change; and we ask that you do what you can to affect change.

GET INSPIRED TODAY

Let the world know that we will not stand for the human rights violations committed against the people of Darfur. We will walk.
